Callaway RAZR Fit Driver

The latest offering from Callaway Golf represents a considerable improvement from their earlier drivers, as well as a change in corporate philosophy. The new RAZR Fit Driver ($400) marks the company’s first foray into adjustable drivers. So-called OptiFit technology offers golfers two movable weights (2/12 grams) and an adjustable hosel (open, neutral, closed). While it might not seem like a lot of options by today’s standards, the RAZR Fit Driver is such an incredible offering that most could play it using the factory settings and still improve their game. In fact, after hitting dozens of balls, this writer ended up liking the neutral hosel setting with the draw weighting as my only adjustment.

Callaway has always been known for their composite engineering, and the RAZR Fit Driver is their best effort yet. According to Callaway, “The crown contains over 7 million turbostratic carbon fibers, which allows our engineers to precisely control thickness, resulting in an optimum center of gravity and high MOI”. It also makes the face lighter and stronger than titanium. Add in improved aerodynamics that lower drag by 14% over its predecessor, the RAZR Hawk Driver, and this big dog packs plenty of bite to go with the bark. During our tests, we found that the driver was balanced throughout the swing with a crisp sound at impact. Overall, we gave it high marks for looks and playability.
